Stickin' It To The Man Project

Sometimes I have a lot of self confidence.

Other times, not so much.

One of those times is when I go to quilt group.

I feel like a complete outsider.

Something to do with the fact that I am not independently wealthy, going to be independently wealthy, or related to anyone that is independently wealthy.

So instead of wallowing in self pity, I'm going to glory in my differences.

Here's my stickin'-it-to-the-man quilt.

The quilt that I made where 99% of the fabric is from an estate/garage sale, free, or from Joann Fabric. Those women 'don't go to Joann's'.

The quilt that I made is completely random and I didn't pick out a pre coordinated fabric kit from a local quilt store and it will not be backed with Minky.

I made this quilt, not in a sewing room, but on a table in my sun room while the girls fought over toys, Meg did play dough or colored and Spencer played on the floor.

This quilt was ironed with an iron that is over 8 years old.

I will not be paying some one to quilt this quilt for me.

It was sewn using a needle that was too big because I had broken all of my other needles while attempting my first machine quilted project, Spencer's baby blanket.

And my machine is not a Bernina.

When I showed the 'ladies' the quilt....?....."That's actually cute."

Um, thanks?

meaning something that — maybe slightly melodramatically — ruins one’s life

Bane of my existence

And I still have to bind the thing

How to make one:

  • Look through a quilt book with your husband

  • Ask him which one he likes best

  • Tell him there's no way in heaven you would make something that complicated, even for the love of your life

  • Look at the pattern for a year

  • Finally give in and start making it - it's the least you could do for the guy who will carry $200 worth of fabric up various sets of stairs 13 times

  • Cut out twice as many pieces as you need because you're a dork like that

  • Have two kids in the mean time

  • Decide to make up your own pattern thinking that's the only way you're going to get the darn thing done in this lifetime

  • Put it together

  • Wait months and months and months trying to talk yourself into quilting it, ignoring not-so-subtle hints from your husband about when it will be done

  • Convince yourself to try a new way of binding it, telling yourself it will be worth it

  • Whine and complain like you are the victim

Have a pleasant weekend.

Fri - Yay

Baby boy's quilt. This is my first attempt at machine quilting...it looks o.k.

This child about got herself sold to the gypsies this week....grrr.

Katie-in-a-box: Harry and David truffles, hot chocolate mix, an old doll dress, old sheet music, some home-made cards, a jar of wooden spools, old buttons, mascara, an embroidered table runner, clothes pins, an enamel pot, some cute girl flannel, and some old flash cards.

I'm so glad that it's Friday, so, so glad.

The Fun Has Arrived!

I couldn't sleep last night. I was excited and terrified. I was excited because the quilt giveaway is finally here and because I didn't contrive arthritis from binding too much in too short a time. I was nervous because I kept thinking 'what if they don't like the quilts? what if this is a mass disappointment? what if they stop "un-following" in droves?'

Then I remembered, oh yes, these are hand made quilts AND they're free. It'll be fine.

The names are an ode to Neil Diamond and my childhood.

Cherry, Cherry

Red, white, and blue fabric, tied with embroidery thread in white and blue. Bound with white fabric and backed with a white sheet. Cotton batting.

Forever in Blue Jeans

Frayed jeans backed and bound with yellow and orange lemon print fabric. Tied with yellow and orange embroidery floss. Cotton batting.

Cracklin' Rosie

High quality fabric, backed with black and white, and lime green fabric. Tied with a variety of colored embroidery floss. Bound with black fabric checkered with white bunnies sporting red neck ties. Cotton batting. This one is my favorite, but don't let that sway you.

September Morn

Hand quilted. Americana themed. Polyester batting. Bound and backed with maroon fabric.

Yesterday's Song

Machine appliqued eight point stars. White centers, followed by colored fabric and cream colored points. Tied with embroidery floss and buttons in the center of stars. Bound and backed with fabric with white flowers on a brown background. Cotton batting.

I have a friend who is a statistician come up with some numbers about the odds of each of you winning, assuming that everyone enters. Everyone has a one in sixteenth chance of winning. If you have two people from the same household, there is a one in eighth chance of winning.

All the binding is finished by hand.

How to Enter:

You must leave a comment. State the name of the quilt that you want to win and your favorite post. YOU HAVE TO PICK ONE OF EACH. None of this: but I like all of the quilts, or she's so clever, how can I just pick one post?

  • You must leave your email address so I have a means of getting a hold of you.

  • You must have entered by Wednesday morning at 7am.

  • I will announce the winner on Wednesday's post and re post the quilts that are still available.

  • Multiple people from the same household can enter, but only one quilt will be awarded per household.

  • You must be a follower.

  • If you live in Idaho I will be sending your quilt with my mom.

  • If you live elsewhere I will be pawning furniture and/or children to acquire the sum to send the quilt.

  • If you live in Oregon, I will be sending the quilt with my in-laws.

  • random.org will decide the winner.

Good Luck!
